Our journey began in 2004 after a car accident left Rone with a serious back injury and years of physical setbacks. A decade of conventional medical treatment offered little relief, prompting Rone to seek out his own solutions. Around the same time, the barefoot movement was gaining traction, thanks in part to the book Born to Run. Curious and hopeful, Rone stepped into his first pair of barefoot-style shoes—and everything changed. That one step led to trail running, hiking, backpacking, and eventually rock climbing. What began as a search for healing turned into a deep love for the outdoors and all that nature offers. From a small concrete RV porch to a tented carport, then to a garage, and now a full-fledged sandal workshop, Toetem Sandals has grown—step by step—into an award-winning brand rooted in purpose and grit.
